Monday, June 11, 200710:33 AM ALC6...The Ride As the saying goes, "It's the journey that is important not the destination". That turns out to be so true. My first Aids Lifecycle ride was TRULY AMAZING!!!! Overall score A-. There were a few things that were a bit irritating but other than those, the ride was TRULY AWESOME. I climbed every hill and swooped down every descent, I rode every mile- never walking / cross-training at anytime or anyplace (BIG SMILE). Day 1- Lots of people everywhere at the The ride out of SF was nice. I had ridden most of this route before and was quite amazed at how easy it seemed this time. I chatted back and forth with my two friends and enjoyed myself. There were some serious hill climbs on I had been told several times that climbing hills was mostly mental. Today and for the rest of the ride I found this to be absolutely true. Whenever I approached a hill, I use to say OH SHIT or OH Hell, today and for the rest of THE RIDE, I changed my thinking to No Problem. I even said it to myself out loud. I dropped her ( the bike) down into my highest spinning gear, sat up straight on the bike with hands on the top of the handlebars, got into a pedaling rhythm, breathed in sync with the pedaling and VOILA!, I was at the top in no time. Never was I out of breath or had a super fast heart rate. The descents/ down hills were another story. As it turns out, my "new" bike was great for climbing but not so good (for me, right now) on the steep descents. I found on the down hills it was extremely hard to control the bike especially with any cross winds which there always seemed to be. There was a lot of shaking going on. The books call this "wobbling" especially with all-carbon bikes and other light weight bikes. Any wind that blew across the street made me and the bike swerve into the road or towards the opposite edge near cliffs, guard rails or trees. At one of the rest stops when some friends asked how I like the descent of the last hill, I told then what had happened and they promised that after the ride they would teach me how to over come that problem. The rest of the ride on Day 1 was great. I stopped at all the rest stops, had lunch, met and spoke to a lot of people in passing on the road or climbing hills. When I rode into camp on Day 1 we were greeted by well wishers again. I was a bit tired but their cheers made me perk up and wave and smile. In camp there were gear trucks, shower trucks, porta-potties and lots and lots of tents. Matt and I grabbed our gear and tent and headed to our spot. Annette had chosen to do the Princess tour which meant she was staying in hotels along the ride. She grabbed her stuff and was off. We saw each other the next day. Matt and I setup out tent, went to dinner, took showers and turned in to do it all again tomorrow. Day 2-6- Pretty much the same thing took place each day. More riding. More hill climbs and descents. More rest stops, porta-potties and meeting new and some familiar faces. I started to get a cold by the end day 4. It was brought on mainly by too much cold weather at night, sleeping on or nearly on the ground every night. I fought it off, so it didn't get severe. If I do this ride again I will go the Princess Tour route if possible. Day 7- The start of the day was the same as the others, pretty routine. Even though we had camped out in Closing ceremonies started and ended. Matt and I gave each other a hug and said WE MADE IT!! People all around started hugging and I even saw some crying going on. This truly was an amazing journey. I'm glad I did it. I had a great time. I made some new friendships which I'm going to pursue. To Brian (Bryan) whom I met after telling my story of my 5 bikes and Sara (Sarah), whom I enjoyed myself immensely riding and hanging together (with similar colored bikes and water bottles) ..I didn't get your digits or contact info. I will be looking for you and asking about you. I wish to thank all my sponsors and friends who encouraged me through all of my training and The Ride itself. I couldn't have done it without you. I rode for you and all those with HIV/AIDS that could not ride for themselves. Thank you all. Love you all, Kerwin Sunday, May 20, 20079:36 PM The Man who walked up Marshall Wall Today started out and ended as a good day for riding. It was the in between that leaves one wondering WHAT IN THE HELL AM I DOING. Today was the last big ride for the Sunday Cat. 2 series ride (SF). It was scheduled for 95 miles and it covered most of usual The crust of this story lies in the infamous Marshall Wall which sits in the middle of Nicasio, Long story short. I WALKED THE ENTIRE 2-3 MILES TO THE TOP, from once it started its vertical ascent. There were headwinds that would make Dorothy remember the twister that took her to OZ. Most of the animals up there were either under trees or kneeling down and it was COLD. The reason I walked is due to the headwinds blowing me and my bike into a fence across on the opposite side of the road in which I was traveling. Recovering from that episode, I got off and walked. Another cyclist in passing stated, "no matter which way you do it, ride or walk this is a workout" and indeed it was. The sweeps Ben and Joseph) came up behind me and talked to me as I trudged up that hill step by step. Once to the top, the descent was fast and furious. It was all I could do to hold on to the bike let along guide it around the curves. My brakes and rims must have nearly caught on fire cause when I got near the bottom of the hill and was suppose to slow down my brake levers were already engaged and at full extension. What a ride!!!!! I turned to go on route 1 and noticed I was in The rest of the ride was pretty easy going. I finally made it to Pt. Reyes for lunch, got a diet Coke (for a caffeine boost) and headed out towards home. I stopped several other times to get Mountain Dew (again for a caffeine boost) and proceeded to climb White's Hill, Camino Alto and that other infamous, hateful Saulsalito Hill with no problems at all. There weather was nice and the cool breeze over the I arrived at the Sports Basement (Presidio) at 5:59pm. To my surprise I was only 30 minutes behind my friend Matt. Hurray!!! I wasn't the slow poke I thought I was. Thought for the day: I WILL NEVER GO OVER THAT HATEFUL MOUNTAIN AGAIN IN (THIS) LIFE. Well, they say one should never say never but in this case NEVER voluntarily WILL I GO OVER THAT HATEFUL MOUNTAIN AGAIN. Ride distance: 97.33 miles Total riding time: 8:48'53 Ave speed: 11.0 mph Max. speed: 32.0 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 2,026.38 miles Monday, May 14, 20075:54 PM I DID IT- YOU DID IT- WE DID IT!!!! YEAH!!!! Today I woke up and checked my ALC webpage for the first time in about a week and guess what? I HAVE REACHED MY GOAL OF $2,500.00 the minimum necessary to qualify to do the ride. I'm totally excited!!!!! If anyone had asked me a year ago if I would ride a bike 500-600 miles to help others afflicted by HIV/AIDS, for those who can't and to help find a cure for AIDS I would have told them to take a long walk off a short peer. I was out of shape, hadn't ridden on a bike in years and didn't know the first thing about fundraising. Now look at me/ us. WOW!!!! Now I can stop worrying about making the minimum donation and concentrate on enjoying myself and meeting lots of neat people. I'm ready to enbark on the second part of this journey thanks to all of you who helped me reach my financial goal and to those who have coached me, carried me and befriended me along the way. The next part of the journey is on me. Like the saying goes, the destination isn't the prize its the journey to that destination. SO OFF I GO ON THIS EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME. Don't worry-You all will be there with me 'cause I'm taking my super duper camera with me and taking lots and lots of pictures so you can see and experience everything as I do. (SMILE). I will also be keeping a blog on my phone (Treo 700w) to be posted when I get back so you will have all the sorted details of my day to day adventure. THANK YOU ALL ONCE AGAIN. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S HAPPENING BUT IT IS. LOVE YA! KERWIN Saturday, May 12, 200711:27 PM Jelly Belly Ride As per the advice of a physical therapist ( I had an appointment with recently) I needed some down time (rest & recovery) from over training. So I decided to take the advice and give my legs and butt a rest before going into the last leg of training before THE RIDE. I didn't ride today but offered my services in sweeping and SAG(GING) so I could still be apart of the action. Below is a copy of the ride report by Ride Report-5-12-07 Jelly Belly Factory:109-112miles 40 Riders In Attendance 2Flats, 1 Bike Chain/Gear Adjustment 2 Car Sag/Sweep Vehicles Ride Leaders: Up before the crack of dawn we met at Orinda Bart for our last big training ride of the season for most of us dedicated Lifecycle riders and TRL's. The route today was to the Jelly Belly Factory, but a bit longer this time. The weather was sunny, but a bit windy for most of the day, but all the ride leaders gathered and welcome the riders. Paolo as usually lead our group stretching in a fun, yet detailed manner. Since this was a VERY long ride, we had TWO car sag/sweeps trailing along the route as on previous rides. Okay, lets get this review going We started out with several large rolling hill climbs up After lunch, the riders split into various groups, but all rode safely and we had several unofficial TRL's with those groups, who had been on this ride before. The official TRL's stayed with the moderate paced group and met up with the other group at the Al Sampa Bridge, where we all rode back to In closing, we did have two errors on the route, but most people were able to catch it or were unaware of this error. One group of 3 riders took off early and left the group after lunch and did take a wrong turn on the return back to BART and took an additional 2-3 miles but made it back safely to Bart. The ride leaders all worked well together and supported each other and made a great team as usual. Special THANKS and acknowledgements to Kerwin Alexandar (ALC Rider) in helping to car sag/sweep support and Opal and Lessa for making everyone feel safe, supported and well taken care of on our ride. I think you guys ROCK and its been a GREAT pleasure to have been able to train and ride with you this year. It really does take a TEAM to make this happen, and you guys are wonderful. Sunday, May 6, 20079:03 PM Jon P. Memorial Ride- 2 day/overnight ride This weekend was the rescheduled Jon P. Memorial ride. This ride was a 2-day, overnight jaunt to The Russian River and back. We met in The group that was there was a nice group. I would say about 50 or 60 of us in total. I was excited and nervous all at the same time. I hadn't slept too soundly the night before wondering what this experience would be like and mostly if I had the stuff to make the journey. The ride out was good, a bit cool so jackets were worn but otherwise sunny, a good morning to ride. There were no accidents that I heard of and no one got stopped by the cops for disobeying traffic laws. The ride out was mostly familiar territory until the Marin Cheese Factory. The only difference this time was I CLIMBED UP AND OVER WHITE'S HILL WITHOUT STOPPING!!! HOOORAAAYYY FOR ME. This was definitely a mild stone for me. Every time before I had to stop at some point then continue up and over. I was smiling my Grinchy smile all the way down the other side. Once past the Cheese Factory I was in uncharted waters. I was putting all my training tactics, advice and tips into effect. I had my 2 water bottles, one with Gatorade the other with Spiz. I sipped on the Spiz periodically to keep the muscles from getting sore from the lactic acid buildup. I drank and refilled my Gatorade bottle at each rest stop & lunch which was at Matt and I pretty much rode together. I could always see him throughout the ride to camp- The Casini Family Campground. On the way back was a different story. All kinds of terrain were encountered- flats, rollers, climbs and descents. We even had some headwinds for a while. The last few miles into camp were the best, there was one major climb and then a very nice descent through a forest which provided shade and a nice cool breeze which we welcomed cause by that time the weather was very warm. WE ARRIVED IN CAMP AROUND 4:30PM. We parked our bikes, set up the tent and took a shower all within an hour of arriving there. The rest of the evening was spent talking to some of the other cyclists that we had met on this ride and the roadies. I swear, those roadies are some of the best people. I talked to 2 of them that were working the gear truck and they gave me some great packing tips. Touche for the roadies!!!! Dinner was great, lots of food and drink for everyone. Nightfall came and people gathered around and made a campfire. There was a nice guy I met named Peter who brought his guitar and was playing some tunes while others huddled around the campfire and talked amongst each other. Nice and cozy. I went to bed around 8:30 or 9. Sunday morning was a little nippy at first light but by the time we were heading out it was warm. No jackets needed this morning. Today's ride took us along the coast. It views were spectacular!! I stopped once or twice to take pictures. Once again we had all types of terrain to ride over. We rode through some towns like The ride after lunch was back to familiar territory, a stint through Samuel Taylor Park (bike path), Lagunitas, White Hill, Fairfax, Camino Alto then home. The ride back was little challenging for me but not horrific. I was afraid of getting too tired to make it back, but alas no accidents and no mechanical failures with the bike. The problem I had was with my shorts. They kept moving around and irritating the Hell out of me. I applied Body Glide several times to no avail, so I wound up taking two doses of Ibuprofen during the return trip to ease the pain. I wound up talking to Downtown Julie Brown about this and she thought my shorts may be too loose. Since I had lost 10 pounds in the last month or so, my short size has probably changed as well. Dammmmm it!!!! Just after I finally obtain 7 pairs of shorts for the RIDE, now I have to get new ones all over again. She says the shorts should be skin tight and not moving around. So off to the bike shops I go to try on smaller (L) size shorts now. Oh well, better this is known now than on the ride when I'm stuck with what I have with me. I rode most of this ride back with Dan. Once out of the gate this morning I lost site of Matt except one time I was coming into a rest stop and he was taking off. Needless to say he got back to the starting point a little after 4pm and I got back around 5:30pm. All in all a nice ride back. I took my time, talked with Dan a lot and ran into Peter riding his recombant bike. He is such a jolly fellow. I'd like to talk with him more. Dan is a good motivator. He kept me thinking positive things as I was getting more and more tired. He put up with all my wining too- a good sport Dan is. The Spiz worked its magic. My muscles never gave in so I never gave up, just took my time riding at a leisurely pace. The last hill climb for this ride was Camino Alto. I had climbed it forwards and backwards before without any problems, today was no different. Once down on the other side, I could see the bridge where we had started. I breathed a deep sigh of relief. I HAD MADE IT. BOY WHAT A FEELING!!!! Things learned on this trip: Spiz works for me. Next ride I will have both water bottles with Spiz (www.spiz.net). I will invest in insulated water bottles to keep the liquids colder longer. I will find/buy shorts that fit tight so they don't move around and cause irritation. The number one thing I learned is I NEED TIME OFF FROM RIDING. I have been training since October of 06. I have been doing back to back rides since February. I have done east bay and SF/Marin rides. I am tired of seeing the same sites. Diagnoses: Reached the point of over training. Treatment: rest and recovery (for about a week, then go back to training again...lightly, nothing too taxing before THE RIDE. Ride distance: 149.96 miles Total riding time: est. 16 hours (includes both days riding time) Ave speed: 11.4 mph Max. speed: 41.8 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 1929.05 miles Tuesday, May 1, 20072:46 PM The Perfect Fit-Bike fit with Curtis Cramblett Today I went to see a Professional Bike fitter & Physical Fitness Trainer. His name is Curtis Cramblett. I have one thing to say about him. HE IS FANTASTIC. I'm less than 2 hours he made the necessary adjustments to my bike that was needed to make riding the bike totally effortless. The change I felt in my sitting, pedaling and movement on and off the bike was greatly enhanced to the point that I could daydream while riding which I have never had that kind of feeling before. Long story short- the seat and handlebars were adjusted. I had to purchase an adjustable stem to raise the handlebars. I went to my regular LBS- they had it in stock. They were surprised to see the new bike. I was nervous thinking they may get upset with me because I didn't purchase the bike from them. Things were a little awkward for a bit but business was taken care of and I got what I wanted in the end. Curtis also suggested getting a foam roller to aid in relaxing/ massaging my muscles that were just full of knots. I ordered one as soon as I was able to get to a computer. Riding the bike around the block felt like a dream. I felt as if I could ride this bike day and night and never get off. We'll see, next training ride is a 2-day, overnight ride. Sunday, April 29, 20078:09 PM Los Vaqueros Dam -a Tough Ride Today was a weird and most tiring day. The weather was nice for riding. Today's ride was in the east bay and started at On with the story. Upon arriving in The ride took off at a very high speed. I was clocking 20-24 mph until the first rest stop. The calendar stated 10-12 mph. I knew then I wasn't going to be able to maintain this pace for the whole ride. The mistake in traveling speed was acknowledged at the rest stop and the group broke up into fast and slower riders. I of course was in the latter group. The slower pace was nice. We rode through some very nice residential areas, some rolling hills as well as some fields with cows and other farm animals. Upon reaching the dam, I was very tired and was sure I wasn't going to be able to make that hill climb up to the dam. I waited a while, then thought, Heck, I've ridden all this way to see this dam and then to be only a few thousand feet from it and not see it was a sin. So, I muscled up what courage and energy I had left and started that uphill climb. The pitch had to be 10-15 %. I could feel it in my seat pressing hard against my "gender parts". That only happens when the pitch is steep. As I was approaching the first turn of the climb everybody had started their descent. I said DAM I HAD MISSED OUT. To my surprise as the riders were passing they were cheering me on and upwards for making the attempt. This put a Grinchy smile on my face and I decided to keep going. I did and I made it to the top. To my other surprise my friend Paolo who was the designated sweep at that time turned around and followed me up. He even took picture of me at the dam so people would know I actually did it. I was really touched by that. Upon returning to the bottom of the dam, most of the rest of the group had continued on...heading towards lunch. The excitement from making it to the top to see the dam gave me a second wind. Those that remained and waiting for me all gave me a huge pat on the back for attempting the climb and succeeding. It was a great feeling. I felt I had won the Tour de France or something. The new bike is definitely a climber. After lunch we headed back to Bart. Mike and Miguel didn't join us for lunch- they had to meet a friend so they went on ahead. For me it was a long and grueling ride back. I lost my second wind and was very tired. It didn't help that we were riding into some heavy headwinds. I hate headwinds, they really slow me down. Paolo stayed with me all the way back to Bart which seemed to take an eternity. We talked and he gave me some tips and advice (Body Glide, better quality shorts, etc.) which I will definitely look into and probably follow. After what seemed to be forever I made it back to bart. I was so tired I almost fell asleep in the truck before I could turn the key on to start it up. It was then it hit me what may have been some of my problem. I didn't have any Spiz (www.spiz.net) with me on this trip. The water and Gatorade kept me hydrated but with no energy like I felt yesterday with the Spiz. I will have to try the Spiz again and see what happens. I went home, ate and fell asleep. I was good to be off the bike. T week will be a 2-day ride. I will have the Spiz with me for sure. Ride distance: 55.82 miles Total riding time: 4:30'01 Ave speed: 12.4 mph Max. speed: 53.5 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 1779.09 miles Saturday, April 28, 200711:36 PM DAY ON THE RIDE- I CAN REALLY DO THIS!!! Today was a BEAUTIFUL DAY- ALL AROUND!! The weather was great, the people I met were great, the ride was great. What else can I say everything was great. Enough of that, now for the details. Upon arriving at this event my whole world/ perception changed. I had never seen so many cyclist, outfits and variations of ages, sizes and colors of people all grouped together to help further a needed cause. I was in total awe. There were lots and lots of people. I have been told there were 600 people participating in this event. Holy Cow, so many people, what was it going to be like on DAY 1 of THE RIDE with an estimated 3,000 people? Matt and I did all our registration stuff and was just milling around when another friend of mine Annette called out to me. I haven't seen or rode with her in a while. It was great to see her. I introduced her to Matt and we all decided that we would ride together. I saw Mike and Miguel as well. I didn't see Khang. I haven't seen him for awhile now. The moment came to ride out. There were so many people that they had us take off in groups. We were about the 3rd or 4th group to go. The ride was one I had mostly done before. GG Bridge, The ride was really nice. It was nice having Matt and Annette to ride with. We followed all the rules and regulations and had a trouble free ride. The only sour note on this ride was an accident we rode past. We saw a young woman stuck up under a school bus. She was one of ours and it was very early into the ride. Later I heard she was alright. This ride was one of the best I have ever been on. There were rest stops every 18-20 miles or so. It was great, just as you needed a break from riding, a rest stop appeared. I followed all the suggestions I had been told or read about. We stopped for only about 10 minutes at each rest stop. Hit the porta-potty, refilled on water and electrolytes then shoved off. Since the ride was to be between 75-80 miles, we broke the ride up into sections- each rest stop and lunch was a section. This took a lot of pressure off you thinking about making the whole ride. I met several other cyclists today, people I had never seen or met before. I even met and talked with several of the Roadies. I thanked them for setting up everything as often as I could. Great bunch of people. The new bike performed like a charm. It is definitely helping me climb hills better. I think I made a good choice here. I motored over Camino Alto. White's Hill, This ride was also a "find out what best works for me ride". Today I utilized 2 water bottles. One filled with Spiz (www.spiz.net) and the other filled with Gatorade. The combo worked well. The Spiz kept the lactid acid at bay and allowed my muscles to continue to work all day long. My muscles never felt tired or overworked as I sipped on the Spiz during the ride. I'll be using it again. I tried out a new pair of shorts with a "highly rated" chamois. That worked well for about 40 or so miles then it became bothersome. I have to figure out what that is all about. We made it back to Sports Basement with spaghetti dinner in hand by 4:45pm. What a great day. I felt if the ride is going to be like this then I CAN SURELY MAKE IT. Ride distance: 76.22 miles Total riding time: 6:21'14 Ave speed: 11.9 mph Max. speed: 37.6 mph Total Training Distance thus far 1723.27 miles Saturday, April 21, 20075:56 PM Test Drive the new bike...It's a Winner The Jon P. Memorial Ride was postponed due to the predicted weather report of major rains and showers. It is postponed till May 5 & 6, 2007. So I ventured out on another posted ALC training ride. My friends Matt and Dan were on this ride so I had someone to ride with. Today started out as a cloudy, cool, wet kind of day. Ok for a bike ride as long as you kept moving, which would generate heat and you would stay warm. Chances of rain was great, but I wanted to test ride my new bike, so out I went. Today's ride was estimated to be 56 miles. Our route of travel was from SF to the Marin Headlands, Saulsalito, Reverse Tiburon loop to The bike handled like a champ. I will have to do more test riding to get use to it. BTW, its name is the BT Express. My father's initials are BTA, so I am naming this bike after him. My other bike was named after my mom and my sister(Virginia-Maria; Jenny-Marie). The bike handled well. For the most part I couldn't feel it under me. When crossing the GGB and the wind blew around the pylons, me and the bike were blown with it. It is so light that when I turn corners coming down hills I can't feel it under me and it was hard to judge how far over I should be leaning- will have to work that out as well. As far as climbing, it is a lot smoother and easier to climb with this machine than any other road bike I have had. Going up the Marin Headlands I had to "cross train" for a little bit (mostly because we reached the Headlands within the first 5 miles of our ride and I wasn't warmed up yet and I couldn't control my breathing that early in the ride- I needed more time to warm up. My friend Matt said, I was only a couple of minutes behind him getting to the top, so even with "cross-training" I was moving uphill faster-That's good to know. I can build from here. The rest of the ride was pretty ok, the misty rain turned into drizzling rain which made me really apprehensive of skidding or something. Especially after last weekends accident I wasn't ready for another one. I took my time and completed the ride. I will have to take another test ride in more accommodating weather. Next weekend is the day on the ride and I look forward to the weather being good and I get to ride my new bike again. Ride distance: 54.03 miles Total riding time: 4:28'44 Ave speed: 12.0 mph Max. speed: 63.6 mph Total Training Distance thus far 1647.05 miles Friday, April 20, 20075:19 PM A New Bike is Born, well, bought is more like it One of my favorite things to do is SHOP. I figure I work hard, I get paid well, so I should use what money I can (what is left over from paying bills and money put into my 401,2 or 3B plan-whichever is the current title in 2007) to buy the things I so richly deserve or whatever makes me feel better for the time being. Wednesday (4/18/07) after much discussion with my roommate and otherwise best friend-TJ, I SHOULDN'T TRUST MY LBS (local bike shop) ANYMORE, after they sent me to a 'LUCKY NOT TO HAVE SLIDE OFF A CLIFF-CRASH' last weekend by sending me out on a bike with loose spokes- See last entry (My Sea Otter Weekend) for more details. So we came to the conclusion that I should get a new bike. Well you didn't have to twist my arm twice....any excuse for shopping was alright with me. . Monday and Tuesday, I have spent any waking moments (other than at work or driving in my truck) surfing the internet looking at the new and improved bikes. I looked into all kinds of sizes, colors, models & materials. I checked reviews and surveys. I finally narrowed it down to 2. One was a Specialized Allez(Aluminum & carbon) and the other was a Specialized Roubaix (all carbon). On Wednesday (4/18/07) a very dear friend/ co-worker- Bonnie, mentioned to me that Mike's Bikes was having a sale on all their bikes. I looked it up on the web and sure enough, there it was. I ran over to the one in SF as soon as I could after work. Long story short: I spent the next 4 hours with a great sales person named Trevor. I told him what I wanted and what I was interested in and we discussed the ins and outs of both bikes. He also mentioned a LeMond Versailles (all carbon) which he thought would be the my best choice. I test rode all the bikes AND THE WINNER IS: THE LEMOND VERSAILLES. As soon as I sat on it and made a couple of revolutions of the pedals, it took off. I was like Gee Wizz, this thing really moves. I took it up 8th street, crossed Brannan where 8th became Kansas. Kansas has some hill climbs on it. The bike headed straight for them. I got up the first hill pretty easily. I stopped at the plateau and let my heartrate go down a bit. As I was sitting their the bike spoke to me. It said, "I'm waiting on you" I replied, do you really want to go up that next hill? It answered "Sure, why not, if you do". So I turned the bike around and said, "If we get up this next hill without any problems, then I'll take you home with me". It said, "Let's go!". We did, and I came back into the shop and bought one. YEAHHHHHHHH YIPPIEEEEEE YAHOOOEEEEEE. They ordered me a new one and said it could be in by Friday (4/20/07) which was good for me cause this weekend was the 2-Day Jon P Memorial Ride. What a great way to break in a new bike. If you wish to see the specification of this bike along with the estimated cost, see here: http://mikesbikes.com/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=39&id=1192 A few necessary accessories (pedals, handlebar brakes, odometer) brought the total price back to it's original price (before the sale price). Again, no riding mileage or calculations for this entry. Saturday, April 14, 20075:02 PM CRASH -BAM- BOOM-My Sea Otter Weekend Overall the weekend was very good. It's the little inconveniences that make one CRAZY!!!!! First- me and my friend Matt drove down to find out that the camping site that I had paid for 2 months ago was NOT AVAILABLE. We were told that camp site "H" was overbooked and that no one had really went out to count spaces and so they were all taken. The only available camping spot was located a half mile away from the event and down a hill that had a 16% grade. GEEPERS, one can only get up that hill with 4 wheel drive. Anything less you were walking or cross training as they call it. Second-Matt and I discovered that the camp site had NO SHOWERS, we had to wash up at Dennys in town when we went for breakfast. Third- Matt and I found a route sheet for the 100 mile bike "tour". We decided to test ride it in the car, good thing too, the route was treacherous with lots of NO SHOULDERS AND NO BIKE LANES, just you, your bike, cliffs and ditches. It then started to pour down raining. We were wondering what would we do if it rained like that on Sunday, how would all the riders get sagged? We put that thought out of minds....it wasn't going to rain and that was it. Fourth-The ride came, there was no formal introduction, as the clock struck 7am, there was a count down and we were all told to go. (Those riding the 15 mile ride were to turn right at some point, the rest of us doing the 100 mile ride were to go down that 16% grade hill, which we learned we would have to climb back up on our way back in). Matt and I were still stretching when we heard the countdown. We had to cut that short, hop on our bikes and take off with the crowd. Fifth-The first 40 miles of the ride was flat, then the climbing started, not bad at first, then came HEADWINDS. COLD, FREEZING HEADWINDS. I mean going downhill we weren't going any faster than when we were climbing. I remember seeing 5-6 mph on speedometer going uphill, and about the same coming downhill which tells you how hard the wind was blowing against you. Sixth-I sagged myself after discovering the spokes in my back wheel were all loose. HELL, I just paid my LBS(local bike shop) $300.00 two weeks ago to have new rims and spokes for my bike. They even checked them after a short ride I did last week and said everything was fine. WELL IT WASN'T. I FOUND OUT THEY WERE LOOSE BY HAVING A FALL. Here are the gory details. I was coasting on a flat area at about mile 57 and decided to stand up on my pedals to stretch my legs when all of a sudden my bike jerked to a complete stop, as if someone had grabbed the back wheel and pulled it from under me, and being clipped in and not knowing what was happening, me and the bike went over into a ditch which was only a few feet from a cliff. There was no one around me for miles. It took me about 10 minutes to maneuver myself to get unclipped, the bike off me and get away from that cliff. Of course I tried to contact someone, anyone....NO CELL PHONE SERVICE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS CANYON- DAMN, so i dusted myself off and looked the bike over. I released the quick release on the back brakes so the rims wouldn't keep rubbing against the brake pads...dangerous I know, but i figured I try to make it to the next rest stop which at that point was maybe 5-10 miles down the road. At 3 miles, a big truck came up and asked me if I wanted a ride, it turned out to be the SAG (Support & Gear) truck carrying water to the next rest stop. I eagerly said yes and dismounted (gracefully this time) and headed to the back of the truck. It was one of those big moving trucks like U-Haul. Anyway, when the driver (Donovan) opened the back door, I was surprised to see about 7 other riders being sagged. I got in and got seated and then the door was closed. HOLY SH*T, WE WERE IN TOTAL DARKNESS. The truck started on its way, climbing, descending, twisting and turning, throwing us all around. I NOW KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT COMING ACROSS THE BORDER (thrown into the back of a truck, pitch black, with a bunch of strangers). CAN IT GET ANY WORSE..YES. Seventh-The truck finally stopped at the rest stop which was at the top of a very steep hill. We got out and got our bikes, ALL THE WINDS IN ALASKA WERE NOW UPON US. I never felt wind like this. It keep coming and it was pounding. I look to the other side of the road and there are a couple of women trying to be rest stop with some fruit. It turns out they had no water and riders before us went on ahead trying to make it to the next rest stop without any fluids. I had a bike mechanic look at my bike. He said all the spokes were loose and who ever put this wheel together did a lousy job. A new wheel shouldn't need truing for at least 1000 miles. I was pissed then. If I had cell phone coverage I would have called my LBS and gave them what for. Eighth-Donovan, the truck driver said I could ride with him back to the event cause my bike wasn't going to be ridable, especially in this headwind I would be just killing myself. I agreed to ride with him. I jumped in the back of the truck again with my bike. A couple others did the same, some brave souls wanted to ride as much as they could before being sagged. Once we rode off, I remembered I had left my hydration pack by the port-o-potties. DAMN. Long story short, I had to ride with Donovan to his next destination and then return with him to pack up the rest stops in order to retrieve my hydration pack (which had all my NECESSARY STUFF-wallet, keys, cell phone, etc.). Once I got it back, I helped him pack up all the equipment and we headed in. We had a nice talk, I met his daughter and all was well with the world again. He dropped me off just past the 16% grade hill that we rode out on. I rode the bike across the finish and was greeted by two women ringing cowbells as if I were the first to come back. It was nice, I just smiled and said I was last to get in. Just then another guy rode up behind me. He wound up getting off another truck/sag. So I WAS SECOND TO LAST- YAY!!!! Ninth/Last-The women at the finish gave me a ticket to get some free food/ bar-b-q. Turns out all the food vendors had closed shop and alas no food for me or the other guy. I met up with Matt. We packed up our tents and stuff and headed to Chili's for a nice dinner and then the ride home to get a hot shower and some sleep. Matt btw made the whole course. I only saw him once or twice during the ride at rest stops. He said he had a hard time too and he had to walk some as well, but he had no mechanical problems with his bike. Turns out alot of riders sagged themselves. I talked to one guy named Dustin and he has done other centuries without any problems but he said those headwinds took too much energy from him. Others said the same thing, so we didn't get rain but we got wind. Next time I will ask for a "perfect" day, no wind, rain, not to hot or cold. :O) Since this was not an Official ALC training ride, but a training ride for me to guage myself for future training before the ride. No distances, or other bike calculations (i.e. speed, total time to complete ride, etc. ) is not documented. Saturday, April 7, 200712:48 PM CLOUDY-GREY-DEPRESSING DAY SOME LESSONS HAVE TO BE REPEATED TILL YOU LEARN THEM, or at least listen and follow through on them. Today wound up being a DEPRESSING DAY 4 ME.-Reason: I didn't listen to what I had said to myself last week. In case you don't remember, last week I said I was going to take this weekend off. I didn't listen. I got an email from a friend of mine named "V" (I'll be using abbreviations instead of spelling out the persons' name- hopefully it will keep me from having to apologize for something later). He said he wanted to do a nice leisurely ride on sat (4/7/07) with a couple of friends to ride with him and his new boyfriend (whom he is training to ride). I figured what the heck, a nice leisurely ride shouldn't hurt right, WRONG. Only 2 other people showed up for this ride. They happen to be a couple as well- M & M. Anyway, I noticed this right off, but passed it off as just a coincidence but nothing to worry about. As we started to ride, we made several stops and both couples started in with the "pet name calling" and the hugging and smooching. It was great to see and hear but my heart sank. Both couples showing affection for each other was a great thing, but for me it showed how lonely I was. I didn't have anyone to do this with and I started feeling out of sorts. I hung in for this as it happened a couple of times but after a while I couldn't watch or hear it anymore. It wasn't any of their faults this was happening to me. It was just me. I'm a "sensitive" kind of guy and well, I want what they have and seeing it up close and personal like that well, made me want it even more, to have it right there and then as well. So I started distancing myself from the little group. Besides the day was again cloudy, foggy, misty and outright not a good riding day. I distanced myself by leading the group on the ride and then whenever they started in on the "intimate stuff" I headed off again, claiming I was going ahead cause I knew they would catch up to me, but in reality I didn't want them to see the tears starting to well up. The ride wound up taking us up the 3 Bears (the easy way). So I headed up each hill ahead of the group and once I reached the top of Papa Bear, I rode on off into the misty, rainy fog and headed back home. "V" asked me just before I rode off if I was going to join them for lunch, I said "no, I was going home" and before he or any of them could ask me anything else, I made my decent into the fog. I got back to my truck crying. I sat inside warming up for about 10 minutes then headed home. I sat home by myself the rest of the evening. I grabbed some lunch out and kind of stayed by myself. I'm wondering if I can have something like that. This "Experience" could open the door to something like that couldn't it?? I can't believe with over 2000 riders doing this "Experience" I haven't been able to meet anyone whom I could possibly date. I have been told that meeting someone on this ride or during the training rides may not be a good idea, cause if things don't work out then you may have to see them again and it will be awkward for both parties. This may be true but I think adults could work things out if they try. I'M FEELING SORRY FOR MYSELF. This wouldn't have happened if I had listen to myself and not ridden today. Ride distance: 23.67 miles Total riding time: 2:07'17 Ave speed: 11.1 mph Max. speed: 39.6 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1593.02 miles Sunday, April 1, 200711:57 AM ALC EXPO -Met a new friend/ riding buddy Overall today was a good day. Today was the EXPO where one could get lots of information concerning "THE RIDE", buy clothes, get bike fittings, exercise and nutrition information all under one roof. The day was cloudy, windy, foggy and very cold. The ride I chose today was through Golden Gate Park, Ocean Blvd and up to the San Andreas & Sawyer Camp Trails (up along Skyline Blvd), approximately 43 miles round trip. My friend Matt drove both of us today. He just got a new bike rack for his car and was testing it out with our bikes. We were able to drive in from the east bay and park 1 block away from where the Expo was being held. The ride(s) were set up like the sponsored bike rides, where riders get numbers for their bikes and helmets. Mine was number 1020. I saw Mike & Miguel, Kang, Kurt, Jeanne and Russ. I didn't see Ananda till after I had returned to the Expo. I don't think she rode. It was great seeing her though. I love seeing her, she makes me smile. When time came to ride out we all gathered out in the street. It seemed like there were hundreds of us waiting to start out. We all rode in single file which made the line very long. Once out of the park per se gaps in the line became evident and riding at a nice pace was obtainable. On one of the climbs Matt took off and I wouldn't see him again till after we had arrived back at the EXPO. Turning onto Skyline blvd and starting the first of many climbs on this ride today, I met a man named John. Turns out he is a slow climber (like myself). In talking with him, I found out he lives in the east bay- Alameda in fact. What luck, to meet someone who lives in the same town as I do and is doing this ride. I instantly wanted to get to know this man more and hopefully become friends and perhaps riding buddies. As it turned out, John and I did just that. We talked and got to know each other all during our ride. We both ride about the same pace and climb hills very slowly. It was a great feeling for me to finally have met someone I can climb hills with, without being left in the dust. A selfish thought I'm sure, but it sure felt good. Along the route I developed what I'm calling my "climbing technique". I discovered that if I lower my heels on the down stroke that my upper calf and lower hamstring muscles come into play and that I'm able to give more thrust to the pedal stroke which makes the bike move up the hill. I tired this technique out several times and it works like a charm. I was able to catch up to and even pass John while climbing using this technique. Mind you I am still no Speedy Gonzales going up hills but I felt less muscle fatigue/ burn. I kept using it the rest of this ride. As fate would have it, by John and I climbing slow, we traveled the route mostly by ourselves. At one point we thought we were following the route when we wound up at a DAM. The dam was suppose to be the turning point for ride #2. We were on ride #1 and weren't suppose to see it. So we figured we made a wrong turn somewhere. We checked the route sheet and sure enough the directions and streets weren't as clearly visible as one would have liked and there was no one at the turn off to tell us which direction to go at that particular point and thus we made a wrong turn. By the time we figured all this out, riders from group #2 were showing up at the dam. We figured that by now, we were too far behind group#1 to catch up and so we headed back to the expo on our own. 10 minutes into our trek back power riders from group #1 were heading back. They had caught up to us and now were passing and leaving us behind. John and I trudged on back battling the headwinds we thought we had left behind when we encountered them in the other direction. How is that, that you have headwinds in 2 directions? I don't know the answer to that, but it was happening. Once back to the EXPO I did 2 of my favorite things. I got something to eat and I started shopping. I ended up getting lots of things I needed for THE RIDE. I got bike shorts/ bib shorts/ socks/ shoes and a jersey. Matt and I finally met up walked around some then headed back home. John and I exchanged phone numbers and agreed we ride together again soon. Even though today's ride wasn't a long one I was exhausted. I made a decision that next weekend I was taking off from riding. I needed a break. It was becoming a chore and I've starting to not like it. I need a weekend to rest. With 2-12 hour work days during the week I wasn't getting much rest or sleep and biking on the weekends weren't allowing me any time to recuperate from the work week. Ride distance: 35.28 miles Total riding time: 3:30'32 Ave speed: 10.0 mph Max. speed: 35.9 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1569.35 miles Saturday, March 31, 200710:15 AM Broken Spoke- SAGGED- 1500+ MILES Today started out being a very good day. The weather was nice, there was a nice group of riders on the training ride I had decided to do, which covered Orinda, Danville & Castro Valley then up and over Redwood & Pinhurst Roads. The ride up till Redwood road was very doable for me, then came the dreaded Redwood road. I had never been on this road before so I really didn't know what I was in for. The climb up was steady and slow. Several times I had to "cross-train" up the hill. Just as I was nearing the top and thanking GOD there was going to be a nice down hill ride, I heard this loud "POP". First thought was my tires had kicked a stone from under a wheel, then I heard click, click, click as I slowed down to see what had happened. Sure enough when I dismounted the bike and looked closely at the back wheel a spoke had broken. I stood there pinning what to do next, I knew how to change a flat or put on a chain that has come off the spokets but this was neither of those mechanical problems. Luckily within a few minutes, another ALC rider came up and she looked at the spoke and suggested we tape it. I had tape with me in my knapsack with my first aid kit. You know the Boyscout is always prepared (ha ha ha). After we taped it up, I thanked her and headed off for my well deserved descent. As I was flying down the hill, these thoughts hit me...will my wheel be okay in this state? Will another spoke break under this weight and fast spinning? Will I be able to finish this ride? Where was my friend Matt?- GONE way ahead by now. So as I completed the descent in one piece and started climbing up Pinehurst Road, I felt like I was dragging. No one was around so I kept on trudging up the hill. When I got to the top of Pinehurst, once again, thanking GOD that there was another great descent lying before me, another ALC rider rode up behind me and stopped me. SHe noticed that my back wheel was wobbly and inquired as to what was going on. I explained what happened and she immediately said I couldn't finish this ride. It was very unsafe and in the long run, NOT WORTH IT if something were to happen to me. She called a friend of hers that was waiting at the Orinda Bart. They SAGGED ME. In a way I was glad, I was tired and upon riding back to bart in the SUV, I could see I had some distance to cover still and with that broken spoke there is no telling what could have happened-whatever it could have been it wasn't going to be good. So, happy to get back to bart, I saw Matt signing in. I was like wow, he really was ahead. It would have taken me at least another hour or so to get here on my own. We talked a bit then I called my bike shop in Alameda. They said bring the bike in and they would see what they could do. I was hoping to get the bike back later this evening cause the EXPO was tomorrow and I wanted to ride again. I took the bike in, they repaired it and gave it back. They suggested I get new rims/spokes. The ones currently on the bike were fatiguing and probably were not strong enough to continue holding my weight and go over rough terrain. So new rims & spokes were ordered. By the calculations (below) I have officially ridden over 1500 training miles as of today. Hooorrrayyyyy!!!!! Ride distance: 48.74 miles Total riding time: 4:15'58 Ave speed: 11.4mph Max. speed: 35.9 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1534.07 miles Saturday, March 24, 20076:41 PM Price and King Century-Lost & Found- Hot & Cold Today's tale is one that may upset some folks...hope it doesn't but if it does OH WELL. Today's ride was all over the map. It started out cold and a very steep hill climb right at the beginning of the ride. After a couple of hours it got pretty warm. By evening it got very cold again. People put their clothes and belongings in the sag vehicle when it got warm to make themselves more comfortable for the long ride ahead. Poeple got lost (due to incorrect directions on the route sheet-at several different areas) and had to be found, picked up and brought to a regroup. Even I got lost for a short while- due to me missing a sign of a particular street, not to the directions on the route sheet per se. At lunch we were made aware that the SAG vehicle was going back to Orinda Bart cause the people in the SAG vehicle had another appointment. Alot of us didn't like this but we thought we would be so we didn't say anything at the time. On the ride back to Orinda, the weather changed within a matter of minutes to cold, foggy and very windy. Both groups-the power riders and the slower group got lost due to misdirection on the route sheet again. We all wound up coming together on the Iron Horse trail which we all figured we take to the Walnut Creek Bart. We were in Pleasanton at the time. So 20- 25 miles in the cold we had to ride. We made it to Danville and made a pit stop at Starbucks to warm up. We got back on the Iron Horse Trail again and went to Walnut Creek. The power riders took off and left us (the slower group) behind once again. It was ok, we were all headed in the same direction. Once we reached Walnut Creek bart we took a long deep sigh of relief. We congratulated each other on making it through this long and now very cold ride. Some of us froze on the way back cause our jackets, etc. were still in the SAG that had returned to Orinda Bart. Some of the power riders had to go home without some of their stuff because the SAG vehicle was locked in Orinda and the person with the keys was riding in the slower group, so we/ they hadn't gotten to Orinda Bart by the time the power riders arrived. A very strange day indeed. This makes me want to keep my hydration pack that holds my jacket, keys, etc. with me at all times so this kind of thing doesn't happen again. I don't think this will happen again, especially on the ride. This was an anomaly. Ride distance: 83.74 miles Total riding time: 7:02'14 Ave speed: 11.9 mph Max. speed: 81.9 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1485.33 miles Sunday, March 18, 20076:08 PM Nicasio Valley Loop Ben Armstrong said last week that any ride we do (on Sunday's- his rides) from today on would be harder/ tougher than any day on "The Ride" itself. So, when we complete these future rides, the rides on THE RIDE should be a breeze. I'm hoping that is the case. :O) Today's ride was overall very good. We made several hill climbs. The usual Camino Alto, White's Hill and a new one Nicasio Valley hill. The Nicasio Valley hill in itself may not have been that bad but we started climbing it a couple miles after climbing White's Hill, which for me wasn't enough time to recuperate from one to the other. I stopped once on Nicasio Valley Hill and that was that. I may have been able to make it over without stopping but given the fact that I just did Lake De Valle yesterday, I am using the excuse that I was just plain tired from that ride to do this one without feeling it. I resided myself to that fact that today my goal was to just complete the ride in one piece. I wasn't going to break any records and I was going to go slow and easy no matter how long it took me. Needless to say, I only saw Matt sporadicly during this ride. I ran into a couple of my co-workers who were actually on another ALC training ride that began in Mill Valley and went the same route as ours until they reached Nicasio, then they headed back. It was great seeing Charlie and Bea. Both of them had done the AIDS ride before and are great resource people for me. :O) The ride over White's Hill was a little tough but I made it over with some cheers from Downtown Julie Brown. It was great seeing her as well. She's always positively motivated. Once over Nicasio Valley Hill, the ride into Nicasio and around the reservoir was very nice and very scenic. I stopped along the way to take pictures, one cause I had never been here before and it was beautiful and I wanted to capture the moment and two, it gave me an excuse to relax a bit then continue on. There was no one in front or behind me as far as I could see. A car passed every now and then, otherwise it was me and nature. I was ok, I had my GPS so I wasn't afraid of getting lost. Besides, where I was there was only one road of travel, so getting lost wasn't a real possibility. I came across some humans (ride leaders actually) pointing the way into Samuel Taylor Park's bike route so we could bypass a bad part of roadway into Lagunitas. Lagunitas was lunch. I saw Matt, we ate together, then he took off. I was very near the last one out. I didn't care, I kept my goal in mind, just to finish in one piece. The ride back to SF was quiet and peaceful. I was riding alone mostly till I got to Fairfax. I was accompanied by several women on this training ride until Mike's Bikes in Sausalito. There I headed off with Matt again till he disappeared into the horizon. We met again at the top of Saulsalito hill and rode into SF like champions. Riding across the bridge I gave myself a pat on the back. I did it!!! I made it through two tough rides back to back. I am definitely stronger than I was when I first began training in October. I felt sure I will do ok on THE RIDE. My plan for the coming week is to get ready for my first CENTURY next Saturday. Rest and eat. Heaven help me. Ride distance: 69.06 miles Total riding time: 5:58'18 Ave speed: 11.5 mph Max. speed: 34.8 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1401.59 miles Saturday, March 17, 20075:28 PM Lake De Valle-"Heart Attack Hill"- Buzzards flying overhead Today's ride was called Lake, Wine, Roses & Windmills. Well I never saw a Lake (Lake De Valle that is), I didn't get to drink any wine ( and I could have really used some), I didn't see any roses to speak of unless you are talking about the lady selling them outside of the grocery store- that doesn't count. And I didn't see any windmills-we opted for lunch instead of adding distance to see them. The weather was great. Nice and warm with just enough breeze for cyclists to be comfortable. The ride up to Lake De Valle was nice. The climb up to Lake De Valle was PURE HELL. THAT IS THE WORSE HILL CLIMB I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. It kept climbing, then turning, then climbing some more. It did this at least 4 times. I stopped about 6 times. It got hot and tired really fast. There were some Buzzards flying over head, darting in and out of something on the side of the road above me, but with my eyes stinging from sweat, my body tired of trying to get me and this bike up this hill they looked like they were circling around waiting for me to pass out and die so they could have a feast. On a couple of stops I felt they may win, but I looked up and told them, NOT TODAY, ANOTHER DAY PERHAPS, BUT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET ME TODAY. It must have taken me a half hour or more to climb that DAMN hill. I was cursing all the way. It was hard for me to stay clipped in and all I needed was to fall and couldn't get out of the clips cause I was too tired and worn out. I vowed if that happened, I was turning back and waiting for the rest of the group where we started the climb. All kinds of thoughts were entering and leaving my head-was I fit enough, did I train enough, did I eat enough during the week. I didn't get scared at any time, just AGGRAVATED to no end. Just then, several power riders that had reached Lake De Valle way before my group did, started heading back down. Several of them said hello and cheered me on. They yelled I was almost there and they cheered some more. I thought that was very nice. It also gave me hope of making this death climb a thing of the past. So I kept going and sure enough I was closer to the top than I thought. Several other power riders passed and cheered me on too. I looked ahead and saw my group eating refreshments at the SAG vehicle. I was relieved that I could finally stop for a good rest. I got off the bike and layed down on the grass. My group opted not to go down the other side of this hill to see the lake or to see the windmills which would entail more riding & climbing. We decided to head into Livermore for lunch. Lunch was a blessing. I ate a turkey sandwich, some potato chips and lemonade. I filled my water bottles and was ready for the trek back to Union City Bart. The ride back was uneventful, which for me was nice cause I had had enough with that DAMN hill behind me. If I never see that hill again it will be too soon. Once home, it was too late to go to the gym and use the jacuzzi, so I sat in a hot tub of water. I fell asleep and woke up in luke warm water. I rinsed off and went to bed. A dreadful ride over. Ride distance: 61.36 miles Total riding time: 4:49'19 Ave speed: 12.7 mph Max. speed: 65.8 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1332.53 miles Tuesday, March 13, 20075:08 PM Point Richmond & Brickyard Cove via Bay Trail Today was warm to start with which was a nice change. The ride today was smooth except for one little hill climb somewhere out in Brickyard Cove which I tackled like a trooper. I sped up and over without tiring and/ or having to stop. I figure, if the hill is short and I can see the top, I can gauge my spinning, then climbing out of the saddle to get the extra speed and strength to get over the top. It was nice, people cheered me as I passed them climbing and headed over the top. This is a good formula as long as I don't run out of energy, so timing is important. This isn't a formula I can use on other hill climbs that are long and or really steep. Still working out that formula. Also tried a new sports drink: Cytomax. I liked the taste but don't know if It was any better for me than Gatorade. Will try it a few more times and see. The day started off pretty cool then warmed up while on the Marin side of the bay. Today we were riding into new, uncharted territory for me. I have never been to San Rafael or China Camp, especially by bike. The ride was nice, I climbed over Camnio Alto like a trooper, no stopping. We turned and headed into San Rafael instead of heading into Fairfax. China Camp was beautiful. We had lunch at a point of China Camp where we had a beautiful view of the San Rafael bridge and the east bay coastline. The ride through the rest of China Camp was nice with its rolling hills and smooth roads. Matt and I helped two young ladies in need of bike repair. They didn't know how to fix a flat so we pitched in and in no time, they were up and running again. We stayed with them for a time, then they seemed to have gotten some super powers and took off. We couldn't keep up with them and soon lost site of them. We didn't see them again until we were heading back to SF and was at the top of Sausalito Hill when we saw them heading back into Sausilito. Matt said that there car was there, which meant they had gone back to Sports Basement, signed out and was heading back to their car. WOW, that is some fast riding. Matt then reminded me that they were in their early twenties and we were in our forties. Well at least they said thank you to us for fixing their flat. Kids, go figure! :O) Ride distance: 63.91 miles Total riding time: 5:22'35 Ave speed: 11.8 mph Max. speed: 33.0 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1229.20 miles Sunday, March 4, 20074:27 PM Lagunitas Out & Back Today was a nice day for riding. The sun was out and not too breezy. I was nervous about this ride today cause this was the ride/route that I was left behind and had to make my way back all by myself. Mind you that ride was in October and it was a "Renegade Ride" a.k.a. Unofficial ALC ride which I found out the hard way, THEY CAN AND WILL LEAVE YOU BEHIND. This time I had my GPS with me so I can track the route we take into Lagunitas and use it to ("track-back") make my way back to SF on the exact path I took getting out here. As the ride began my friend Matt was there and I was less afraid of getting lost, at least alone anyway. Matt and I had a good time on this ride. We each took turns being ahead of the other. Once we reached White's Hill, he took off and I did my best to get up and over without t. Ioo much effort. I wound up stopping 3 times, breaking up the hill climb into sections all the while letting my heart rate go back down, then continuing on. Once over I felt a great accomplishment. White's Hill seemed kind of LAME. The rest of the ride into Lagunitas was nice and smooth. Lunch was fun, talked with several "new" people I hadn't met or talked with before. The ride back to SF was nice as well. Going in the reverse direction over White's Hill and Camino Alto was easier to tackle than coming- very nice. Sausalito Hill was still a BUGGER. I made it over without stopping, Matt was waiting at the top of the hill before the bridge as usual. I swear one day I will be right on his tail going up these hills. I must find a formula or something to make that happen. I guess I'll have to do more reading and experimenting with tactics. I don't want to just settle on the fact that our weight differences plays that much a part in this. He weighs about 150# and I weigh about 240#. I'm strong and have plenty of energy, I just have to keep stopping cause my heart rate goes up cause I'm exerting myself, where I guess he isn't cause he weighs less. Oh well, we'll see what the future holds. It was sunny and the ride went smooth and easy. This ride was out of SF. A guy I had met several times named Kurt Schade was the ride leader so I was excited to finally ride on one of his rides. There were several people I knew from other rides on this ride. My friend Jeanne and Russ were there, Ananda and Matt were there. Dorothy was there too. This made me feel a little special cause these people were glad to see me as I was them. This ride went to Fairfax which meant climbing Camino Alto again. This time I had no problems climbing. In fact I figured out a little trick to help myself with the climbing. As I start to climb, I drop into a low gear (spinning gear). As I'm moving I look down at the ground just in front of me. Every now and then I glance up and away, just so I have some idea of what is ahead and as not to plow into anyone that may be slow riding or have stopped. Then I go back to looking at the ground ahead of me and making note of what the ground looks like, like there may be a drop of paint here, and a squashed animal there, a broken paint line here or a pot hole there. All the while this is going on, I'm moving/ climbing and it doesn't seem so strenuous. I also check my heart rate. If it ever gets to 180 I need to stop and let it go down to around 150 then start spinning up the hill again. Today I didn't have to worry about this. I spun nicely, reached the top and headed down the other side. It was a great feeling. I felt like I was accomplishing something. The rest of the ride into Fairfax was nice. Lunch was good. I ate a banana and a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, (PB&J). I bought a bottle of water and more Gatorade for my hydration pack. I took pictures and chatted with several "new to me" people there. Making new acquaintances and friends- a good feeling. The ride back to SF/ Sports Basement was just as nice, except Saulsalito Hill. It's always at the end of a ride when you are tired so it seems more difficult than it really is. I climbed it without any problems and was glad to hit the GGB. It's all down hill from there. Yipppeeeee. Ride distance: 37.55 miles Total riding time: 3:25'50 Ave speed: 10.9 mph Max. speed: 30.4 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1113.29 miles Saturday, February 24, 20076:34 PM Isla de Lago y Pizza 2 Today was a MESS. I'm probably going to make some people upset with me for writing what I'm about to write, but it wouldn't be a personal journal (aka blog) if I didn't write about the good things as well as the not so good. Anyway, here goes. The day was cloudy with a big chance of rain. I forgot to eat breakfast before I left so I gulped down an Ensure nutrition drink as a substitute. It didn't work, before we hit the halfway point on this ride, I was starving and dragging at the tail end of the group. Today's ride was 70 miles which I knew would include a lot of hill climbing, since it was Valdez's ride (drill Sargent) or "Dr. Hill" as he is commonly referred to. I thought I was ready for this but alas I wasn't. The group got lost before we reached the first hill climb. I hate getting lost-remember I have abandonment issues from previous rides (ALC and non-ALC ). We all met up at a gas station just before tackling Lake Chabot (Fairmont Avenue in San Leandro I believe). I was not ready for this, I not only was the last one up the hill, I had to stop and rest before continuing ( talk about feeling like crap) when I finally got to the top, the group had moved on. They were suppose to wait at the top for the last person (which today was me) and then proceed. So, I had to play catch up. Valdez waited for me, which I'm thankful, but he rides a lot faster than I, and it took me 30 minutes to finally get the group in eye sight. Some stop lights allowed me to finally catch up with them. I was tired and worn out at that point. All I wanted to do was sit down, eat and rest. At the halfway point we stopped at a Round Table Pizza for lunch. Most of the group was already there and eating. There were a few "late comers" besides myself. We stood in line, ordered our food and finally sat down to eat. By then the first group was ready to ride again. They got their gear together and started heading out. I felt pressured to eat and run again. I hate eating and then jumping up to ride, it makes me sick to my stomach, literally. Anyway, I had to do it or be left totally behind again, not alone mind you, just way behind the main group. So the few of us that were left gathered our stuff and headed out. Not more than a mile or so from the restaurant Stephen (coach) got a flat. He told me to go on ahead so I wouldn't get much further behind the group, but I couldn't leave him. Once the bike was repaired, we decided that we would never be able to catch up with the group and if they were going to do all the hills that the ride talked about doing, I was never going to make it. So Stephen suggested we catch Bart and head home. I felt bad about not finishing the ride but I was glad that I didn't have to ride anymore. It started getting cold and daylight was slipping away fast. Once home, I replayed the days activities in my mind. I decided I needed to try other rides in other areas to see how I figure into this training thing. I was thinking all the work I put in so far wasn't working. A CHANGE WAS NEEDED, so I RSVP'd for rides in SF. Besides, I was tired of seeing these same dirty east bay hills. I want new scenery. Ride distance: 36.91 miles Total riding time: 3:23'00 Ave speed: 10.9 mph Max. speed: 21.0 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1075.74 miles Sunday, February 18, 20076:25 PM Full Tiburon Loop- 1000+ TRAINING MILES RIDDEN Today was another great day in SF for a bike ride. I met my friend Matt at the Sports Basement and we rode out and back together. It was great. Matt and I definitely ride about the same level. Its cool, cause sometimes he leads and I follow and vice-versa. Today I wanted to challenge myself by riding over Camino Alto without any problems. I did. It was great. I just dropped into my lowest gear and spun up the hill. I stayed right on the tail of one of the training ride leaders. After Camino Alto we turned onto Paradise Rd. A road full of rolling hills all the while climbing ever so slightly. I ate (energy bars) and drank (diluted apple juice) when I needed to so I had a steady stream of energy. Riding the rollers was great and the descent into Tiburon (bay) was exhilarating. For lunch I wanted to eat light but nutritious, so I had a banana and a bag of regular potato chips (replaces Potassium and Sodium) with some gatorade. After lunch, Matt & I headed out, back to Sausalito Hill. I rode up the hill with little problem. I had to concentrate on my breathing but I didn't have to stop and I didn't fall. Again, I dropped down to my lowest gear and spun nicely up the hill. I must say my bike is a CHAMP. No mechanical problems, nothing. Matt and I arrived back at the Sports Basement at 1:55 and signed out. I was really proud of myself today, this weekend. I was able to ride 60+ miles yesterday and then another 35+ miles today. I was a little tired, but nothing serious. I felt good. THIS MAKES MY TOTAL TRAINING RIDE MILES HIT AND GO OVER 1000 miles. WHOOOO WEEEE YAAAAAYYYY!!!! Ride distance: 39.46 miles Total riding time: 3:25'30 Ave speed: 11.5 mph Max. speed: 30.7 mph Total Training Distance thus far:1038.83 miles Saturday, February 17, 20071:07 PM Palo Alto to Sunol Today was a marvelous day. It was a nice and warm, especially in the sun. The ride was mostly flat and over some of the most beautiful terrain I have ever seen especially from the vantage point of a bike. Niles Canyon was breathtaking with waterfalls and plants all over. When there were no cars passing you could hear the river gurgling, such a pretty sound. This was a long ride but with my body and soul rested from the last fiasco (the 3 Bears) I was ready for this nice flat ride. No mechanical problems on this ride. One of the riders had over stepped her riding distance. She wound up struggling from just outside Sunol (approximately 40 + miles) and all the way back (mile 63). Later I found out that her furthest ride was 30-35 miles long and here today she was doubling that. Several people mentioned to her that she should not take such big leaps in riding distance. bonking had occurred and may happen again. Other than that, the ride to Sunol and back to Palo Alto was great. Some nice rolling hills and flats which suited me just fine. I was able to keep a good pace and had plenty of energy bars and gatorade for the whole trip. I met several new people today. Henry from Dublin whom I found out has ridden with Different Spokes- the group who abandoned me in Tahoe. (OOOOOhhhh, just thinking about that gets me all aggrevated). Randy who rides the RIDE every 5 years, Heather who is a professional fndraiser, Aaron who did Lifecycle last year and his friend Steve . Ride distance: 63.83 miles Total riding time: 5:03'51 Ave speed:12.6 mph Max. speed: 25.9 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 999.37 miles Tuesday, February 13, 20076:35 PM 3 Bears and a fall Today was another unofficial ALC training ride. Valdez (drill sargent) had scheduled a difficult ride up the 3 Bears located in Orinda. The ride group consisted of me, Valdez, Stephen (coach) and Dan (the Professor). For Valdez, this ride wasn't any big deal. For me, it turned out to be quite different. The weather was nice for riding. We met at Fairlyland in Oakland and rode the bart to Orinda. The ride began smooth and easy, then we made a turn and all I can remember from that point on was climbing. First was Papa Bear, it was really tough. I had to stop at least 3-4 times. Then came the crest and as I was just about to go over the top when I couldn't keep pedaling and the bike stopped and over I went, straight unto my left knee. Needless to say, 200 + pounds skidding on a knee was not good. Before I could lift my bike shorts/tights to see if I was bleeding I could feel the sting and saw liquid oozing from underneath my shorts/tights. As I lifted up the material the blood was oozing all over. I quickly pulled myself to the edge of the road and got out my first aid kit. I cleaned and bandaged myself up as good as i could. I took several ibruprophen to ease the pain and headache that was coming on strong. After a few minutes the pain subsided, I got back on the bike to continue this hideous ride. Encouragement was given to me by all but it didn't make me feel any better. As we were descending Papa Bear and starting up Mama Bear, I thought to myself, why are my legs so tired, like they have no energy. Then the thought hit me, the day before I "cross-trained" by jogging about 2 miles. So my legs didn't have a lot of recovery time. This became my excuse. Mama Bear wasn't nearly as bad- a slight incline/ rolling hill. Baby bear I didn't even notice. Once the bears were done the group (not including me of course) opted to do another hill climb that was nearby, Pig Farm hill as it was called. They all climbed the hill with little effort, me, I was struggling all the way. Again I had to stop 1-2 times. No falls this time. After Pigbull's descent we turned and headed towards Lafayette. Once again thanks to the Drill Sargent another hill climb was in our midst. This time I was spent. I had no energy left to climb even eating energy bars..my legs weren't having it so I had to walk up the hill. That turned out to be the last hill climb of the day. We made our way into Lafayette, had lunch and made a "Bee-line" to the Bart and headed home. I for one was glad to see this day come to an end. I got home, cleaned myself up, took some more pills and went to sleep. Lesson learned...no leg workouts the day before riding. I need at least one day in between for my legs to recover. Probably need 2 days, so I will have to revamp my workout schedule to make things fit. Ride distance: 28.22 miles Total riding time: 2:58'21 Ave speed: 9.4 mph Max. speed: 30.9 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 935.54 miles Sunday, February 11, 20073:27 PM Tiburon Mini Loop Todays ride was a surprise and a major workout. The day started like this. I woke up around 7:45am cause the sun was shining in my eyes through my bedroom windows. When I finally realized it was sunny and not raining as the weather person had predicted, I jumped up, looked outside to see that the ground was only a little wet. I remembered 2 weeks ago this same scenario happened and I didn't ride and found out later that the day was a perfect day for a bike ride. So this time I made some phone calls to a couple of friends of mine and found they were planning on riding in SF. I jumped up, scrambled around getting clothes together, food, drinks and all the other essential things I needed. One of my birthday presents (I won't mention from whom) was a GPS (Global Positioning System . I also got a bike handlebar holder for it. Anyway, that had to be put onto the bike. With all this running around, I never got the time to stretch before riding. I did get to SF, signed in and was ready before the group rode off. My friend Ananda was there. Khang was there, Russ, his daughter & Jean were there. At lunch I ran into Matt. I once again asked him if he wanted to ride together. He said yes, and after a little break we were off. The ride was very beautiful but exhausting for me.We went up into Paradise Road or Ave and swung around a part of Tiburon I had never seen or been through before. I should have been able to do this ride a lot easier but I was a slacker this week. With all the rain and the cancellations of rides, I took it easy, didn't ride all week and ate pizza, cake and ice cream yesterday (Happy Birthday to me). So I payed for it today. Going up Sausalito Hill on the way back was most the most difficult. I had to stop twice, which last week I breezed right through it. I felt like this was my first time ever riding and I didn't like it one bit. Once I made it to the hill before the bridge, Matt was waiting. I was glad. I took the opportunity to talk a bit while catching my breath and getting ready to make the last stretch back to Sports Basement. We made it back in one piece. I quickly dismounted and put the bike on the truck. I waited for Ananda to arrive. She needed to get back home, so I packed up everything and headed home myself. A very beautiful day. This ride gave me the chance to play with my GPS. It worked wonderfully. I tracked todays ride and will save it on my laptop. I wanted this gadget so I shouldn't get lost in the future (especially when I ride those unofficial rides where they do occasionally leave people behind) and to record The Ride, in June when I do it. Ride distance: 34.01 miles Total riding time: 2:49'45 Ave speed: 12.0 mph Max. speed: 29.6 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 907.32 miles Saturday, February 10, 20073:17 PM The Century Ride- My Birthday Bike Party Today is my birthday. 43 short years ago I was born. I was born 3,000 miles away in the middle of a big snow storm-a big event (at least for my mother anyway, I don't remember that day ). Today was going to be another big event- The Century ride, my first mind you, and it was canceled due to a big rain storm. Some of the people I have been riding with had planned a little birthday party for me. It was held at Round Table Pizza in Oakland on Grand Ave. It was a very nice afternoon. We all met around noon and we ate, laughed, talked and I even received some birthday cards and a couple of gifts. Excellent, I never thought anything like this would happen after only meeting these people a couple of months ago. It's good to have friends. It seems I have made some through ALC. Sunday, February 4, 20077:21 PM Tiburon Out & Back Ride/ Queen Mary 2 Today was a very nice day. The weather was perfect for riding. Today was my first day riding in SF after a little hiatus. I was excited about going over the Golden Gate Bridge again cause I knew I could do it without any problems and this time it was on my Specialized road bike. The other trips were on my mountain/ cruiser bike. My friend Ananada came for the ride today. It was a total surprise and I was totally happy. Seeing her let allowed me to let go of a lot of anxiety of not knowing anyone here. We met up with Jeanne (from the book: The Ride). I was totally happy now, there were 2 people I knew that I could talk to. Ah, life was going to be good now. The ride was nice over and back. I ran into Matt at lunch, whom I met yesterday for the first time, on an east bay ride from Orinda to Walnut Creek. It was nice seeing him again. I think we are about the same level riders so I asked him after lunch if he wanted to ride back together. He said yes. Whooopeeee. Ananda was chatting it up with another female rider so I took my opportunity to ride fast with Matt. On the way back Matt and I met Sandra, a very friendly ride leader who rode with us. It was great fun, we all talked and got to know each other better and Sandra encouraged us all. It felt good to be rooted for and we all had a nice ride back no accidents or mechanical problems. Once back at the Sports Basement, Matt came up with a good idea. He wanted to have his picture taken with the GGB behind him. I took a couple of him with his camera and he did the same for me. To our surprise a couple that was jogging by asked if we wanted pictures of us together. We said yes, and it was done. After that Matt and I said our goodbyes and headed off to tend to our next order of business. For me, I was going to take pix of the Queen Mary 2 coming into SF Bay. A very nice day. I will be returning to do more rides starting in SF. I hope Valdez doesn't take this the wrong way, but it was nice to see a lot of people riding and in an area I hadn't been in. The future rides here will get longer with some hill climbs- I'm looking forward to them. BTW, the QM2 came in at 3:58pm, it was worth the wait. I took lots of pix with my new camera. She truly is a beauty. It took me 2 hours of bumper to bumper traffic to get home. Ride distance: 30.89 miles Total riding time: 2:52'45 Ave speed: 10.7mph Max. speed: 29.4 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 873.31 miles Saturday, February 3, 20077:30 PM East Bay Cat 1 Series Ride #1 Today was a very nice day. Not cold, not to cool, sunny. The ride was very short and I knew that before I RSVP'd to go on it. I was surprised at the lack of organization that was exhibited before and during the ride. The ride went well up till the half way point which was somewhere between 15-18 miles. The route sheet stated California Pizza Kitchen (lunch). People took it literally. A small part of the group which included the main training ride leader stopped at that point and ordered food. The rest of the group had a snack of sorts and was anxious to continue the ride or end it and get something to eat back at the starting point. The power riders of this group, took off ahead of everybody, but we caught up to them when they had to stop and fix a flat. The lunch group stayed behind and the rest of us headed back. Strange indeed the main ride leader not going with the group. Oh well. Once we got back to the Orinda bart station, Valdez, Steve, Diane and I had lunch. We then decided to add some more miles to our ride. We rode out and about Orinda with hill climbs (one real tough one where I had to "cross train" on it at some point till my heart rate was back in normal range) adding about 5 more miles to the day. Overall a very nice day. I was riding with good company. None of Valdez's posse were on this ride. They chose different rides in different places. Several new people I met today were Paul, Matthew and a minister from the San Jose area. Ride distance: 28.12 miles Total riding time: 2:24'17 Ave speed: 10.4 mph Max. speed: 27.9 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 842.42 miles Tuesday, January 30, 20079:56 AM Something to Share: A Song: I Am Changing Today was my first day off during the week since having changed my work schedule. Having Tuesdays off now, will give me a week day to ride during the daylight hours where I can take my time, practice some new skills and enjoy my ride. During my prep to get ready for todays ride I was listening to the soundtrack to Dreamgirls when I heard Jennifer Hudson sing a song titled: I Am Changing. Here are the lyrics to that song. This song is going to be my declaration of personal changes made in my life that have led me to find the courage and strength to do this ride. I hope you like it. I AM CHANGING sung by Effie (Jennifer Hudson) (Dreamgirls-the Movie soundtrack) Look at me, Look at me I am changing Trying every way I can I am changing I'll be better than I am I'm trying to find a way to understand But I need you, I need you I need a hand I am changing Seeing everything so clear I am changing I'm gonna start right now right here I'm hoping to work it out and I know that I can But I need you, I need a hand All of my life I've been a fool Who said I could do it all alone? How many good friends have I already lost? An' how many dark nights have I known? Walking down that wrong road There was noting I could find All those years of darkness Could make a person blind But now I can see I am changing Trying every way I can I am changing An' I'll be better than I am But I need a friend to help me start all over again Oh, that would be just fine I know it's gonna work out this time 'cause this time I am, this time I am I am changing I'll get my life together now I am changing Yes! I know how I'm gonna start again I'm gonna leave my past behind I'll change my Life, I'll make a vow And nothing's gonna stop me now Ride distance:42.66 miles Total riding time: 3:18'29 Ave speed: 12.9 mph Max. speed: 24.2 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 814.30 miles Saturday, January 20, 20079:30 PM Crows, Blackhawks and Deer Nice day. Sunny and cool, not cold. Long ride. Had seat problems. The newest seat E3 was pressing into my sits bones to the point my skin and muscles were sore. Once again the pain became unbearable that I had to take Ibruprophen. Once it kicked in the riding was much better. There were several hill climbs that I couldn't do without cross-training. Not due to lack of effort but too much pain. I kept squirming. During a lot of the ride when the pain was at its peak, I wound up being at the end of the pack. I found it hard to pedal and stay seated. It was hard to keep up. I was accompanied by a very nice looking and very friendly fellow by the name of Paolo. We talked a lot. He gave me some great pointers as well as compliments on my riding (since it has only been two months since I started training for ALC). There maybe something to be said for being last and hanging with the sweeps. Sweeps are the people that stay with the last person so no one gets left behind. A very good thing to have. I hope I get to see Paolo again. He is the first guy outside of Valdez's posse that I was able to have a conversation with and get to know a little bit. No mechanical problems. Oh, one more thing. When we stopped in Danville to have lunch there were a group of power riders (really fast riders) who were there ahead of us. They had pretty much eaten was about to leave when we arrived. To make more room for us ( a bigger group) they quickly parted. Well we came to find out when it was time to pay the wait staff, that the power riders didn't leave any tip. That made us feel angry towards them for doing that. We all agreed that we'd make up for their selfishness. It's such a shame that that had to happen. Ride distance:59.95 miles Total riding time: 5:00'31 Ave speed: 11.9 mph Max. speed: 41.7 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 771.64 miles Monday, January 15, 20076:00 PM Ananda's Ride- Earlier in the week through an email, Ananda asked me if I would like to join her in a ride out in Palo Altos area. We have done several of these types of rides before. Of course I said yes. I had planned for the ride to be a bit longer than it turned out but it didn't matter cause I was with my friend Ananda. We had a nice day and a nice ride. I took a few pictures to remember the day. She was riding a borrowed "hybrid" bike to see if she liked it or not. One step closer to her getting a road bike. While I was waiting for her at the top of one of the hills we climbed I wished that I could get her a road bike and a trainer so she could practice like me. I don't know if she would accept it or not. I don't want her to feel that I don't think she can afford it or something. I just want her to have all I have so she can do what I do, but that is selfish thinking on my part. I guess everyone has to make it on their own, with a little help yes, but not everything just given to them. I don't know...it was just a thought I had. She made it to the top of the hill, I congratulated her and we rode off again then back to our starting point then off to one of our favorite burger joints. I know that with all the CAT series of rides coming up that she will get all the training and help that she needs. Ride distance:20.37 miles Total riding time: 1:59'08 Ave speed: 10.2 mph Max. speed: 32.0 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 711.69 miles Saturday, January 13, 20078:35 PM Sopa, Ensalada, y Pan Ride - Mike's Surprise B'day Party Very, very cold day. We had 19 or more riders. Nice ride into Los Gatos and Palo Alto. One mishap, a guy named Mike (not [Speed-Racer] my training ride buddy) missed a turn by coming down a hill really fast and losing control of his bike (not able to slow down) fast enough) and landing in a ditch. His shoulder was badly hurt. Later we discovered that he had a broken collarbone. Valdez another rider and myself helped the guy to the nearest house to get some help. We wound up getting him a cab to take him to Kaiser hospital in Redwood City. The rest of the day/ ride was good. Valdez and I rode really fast and took a short cut to catch up with the rest of the group. The other rider had since left us to catch up with the group. Later we found out that he got lost and almost didn't find the group, but alas he caught up to us at one of our regroups. Once back at the Union City Bart station The Valdez clan had a surprise birthday party for Mike (Speed Racer). His now boyfriend Miguel was there, Khang, Stephen, Valdez and myself. We had a card and some treats at the Starbucks located across from the bart station. Overall a good (cold) day and a nice ride. Ride distance:55.59 miles Total riding time: 4:25'50 Ave speed: 125mph Max. speed: 27.5 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 691.32 miles Sunday, January 7, 20076:21 PM ALC6 Kickoff Party Today was the kickoff party for the AIDS LIFECYCLE. It was located at a hotel in SF. It was easily accessible by bart or muni. I wore my cowboy gear. Its the clothes I usually wear when I'm not wearing my scrubs at work or my bike gear. I first ran into Stephen and his wife Diane. They were on their way out. I next ran into Khang, then we ran into Mike and Miguel. Ananda found me and we stood together and watched the program and the raffle. They had 6 bikes to auction off, but we didn't win any of them. If I had won one of those bikes I would have given it/ traded it in for one that would fit Ananda. The rest of the evening was uneventful . I was nice to see all those people there. I couldn't help but think that all these people are either riders or roadies. NICE. Saturday, January 6, 20075:18 PM UNOFFICIAL ALC TRAINING RIDE-HILL CLIMBS AND REPEATS Today was a good day I guess. I somehow felt it was short. My best friend Ananda was on the ride. I t was great seeing her and we would be able to play catch up again at the end of the day. The flats were great! It was a route we (Valdez's posse) had ridden before. The hill climbing portion SUCKED!!!! As soon as I felt that I was succeeding in climbing hills slowly and effectively then all of a sudden these repeated hill climb exercises comes along and ruins everything. The repeated hill climbs consist of you doing a particular hill climb 3 times. The first time at your normal pace. The second time an all out fast pace. The third time, whatever you can manage. The thing is the rest time between each climb is very short. Just when you think you have caught your breath, then the next climbing interval is at hand. I had to stop and catch my breath on one of the hill climbs. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Once I caught my breath and let my heart rate get into a normal range, I proceeded up the hill at my normal pace which was much more enjoyable. I tried riding out of the saddle- didn't work. I will have to learn how to do that. After the hill repeat exercises we went to lunch. Ananda's bike got a flat so she had to be sagged (carried by automobile) back to the Union City Bart station. Earlier in the day, Khang got into a little accident. A bike from behind him ran into his back disc brake. Diane took him to the nearest bike shop, had it looked over and brought him back to one of the regroup areas. No mechanical problems. Ride distance:21.93 miles Total riding time: 1:58'59 Ave speed: 11.0 mph Max. speed: 32.4 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 635.73 miles Monday, January 1, 20078:15 AM Happy New Year Happy New Year to everyone. I didn't do much. I stayed in New Years eve. and rested and watched movies on New Years day. A rest day for me and my bike. Sunday, December 31, 20067:40 PM UNOFFICIAL ALC TRAINING RIDE-UNION CITY BART- ORINDA BART Nice day, very cool when riding and when out of the sunshine. I drove to Sports Basement before the ride this morning and bought 2 new outer jackets/ jerseys. They have fleece inside to keep you warm while riding through cold air. I also just received (yesterday or the day before) in the mail my order for Pearl Izumi's therma-fleece bike tights and a new pair of PI winter riding gloves all of which I'm wearing today. The ride was nice. The posse and I, (which now includes a new guys and a "special friend" of Mikes- Miguel) followed Valdez over hill and dale. We stopped several times and stretched. We all took turns leading the group. We got a little lost but were quickly guided back on track with the help of a passing biker. Mike got a flat and we all pitched in to help him. I like how we all help each other....it makes us connected. We reached Orinda/ Orinda Bart station just as the sun was going down. Good thing, I didn't bring my headlight. We stopped at a Starbucks coffee shop in Orinda, had something hot to drink, then got on bart and headed home. Saturday, December 30, 20067:53 PM Shoreline and Doggie Trail Loop Nice day, the weather was cold at times but sunny. The ride was nice, mostly flat and went from Lake Merritt in Oakland around and through Alameda and back. No casulaties, no mechanical problems. I climbed up Mac Arthur Blvd at Grand (Oakland) with no problem. Time to get some winter/ cold weather clothes. Ride distance:51.14 miles Total riding time: 4:25'41 Ave speed: 11.5 mph Max. speed: 22.7 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 575.70 miles Sunday, December 24, 200611:30 AM Merry Christmas to me I decided to get myself some nice things for Christmas. I went to Performance Bike in Berekely (new, grand opening) and got myself a new bike helmet, some jerseys and a new heart-rate monitor. My roommate got me the camera I was asking for. I can now take pictures on all the rides I do...this helps keep the memories alive. Monday, December 18, 20067:38 PM South Bay Loop- UNOFFICIAL ALC TRAINING RIDE I used a vacation day from work today. I rode with Valdez and Stephen. They are both retired and ride a couple of days during the week as well as the weekends. They both have been riding for years where I just began riding in May of 2006. I was very happy that they asked me if I wanted to ride with them today. Today was a nice day. The weather was nice and warm. It also marked the first time I am riding 3 days in a row. I started out ok, then halfway the ride by butt started hurting. I took some Ibrupropen to ease the pain, then I started getting tired. The ride was pretty flat. A great ride if you are rested and ready to go. I wont be getting on the bike for the rest of the week so I will be able to ride on sat. No mechanical problems yet to date. Ride distance:45.08 miles Total riding time: 3:34'10 Ave speed: 12.6 mph Max. speed: 26.9 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 524.56 miles Total Riding Distance -3 days in a row: 114.01 miles Sunday, December 17, 20065:10 PM Lake Chabot (3 climbs-Chabot, Monterey & Mac Arthur) Nice day today. Not as cold as yesterday (12/16/06). 10-12 riders. My bike did an excellent job!!!! I spun nice and slow up each hill. I didn't get tired or out of breath. I found my rhythm or the hills rhythm and adjusted to it. I didn't have to "cross-train", another word for walking the bike up the hill. I kept up with the group. Whoooo weeeee! I feel like all the training I'm doing on the rides and at home on the trainer is working. I feel now that I just need to maintain what I have learned, get stronger and faster. Today I am very proud of myself and my bike. Saturday, December 16, 20066:00 PM Fremont-Mission Loop (Animals Ride)- Bike name Today was a very good day! It was cold as hell around 40 degrees F. My training over the past 2 weeks on my trainer really paid off. My climbing has really improved. I rode/ spun up most of the hills and took command of the fast descents pretty much with ease. I feel totally connected to my bike now; which by the way has been given the name Jenny-Marie, named after my father's pet name for my mother and a slang on my sisters name. Jenny-Marie sounds a lot better than Virginia- Maria. Anyway, my mom having recently passed away and my sister living 3000 miles away, I carry them both with me everywhere I ride. Silly I know, but I like it. It makes me feel better. Mike and I got a chance to talk some. He works for Kaiser Hospital- Nuclear Medicine supervisor. I told him I work for UCSF Medical Center as a Surgical Technologist. It was nice getting to know another guy on the training rides. It seems that some guys aren't so open to getting to know one another. They seem to talk a bit during the ride but once its over, "blink" and they are gone. Hmmm, I wonder what that is all about. Last note here. I'm really keeping up with the group now. I feel like I belong. Its nice. Ride distance:35.88 miles Total riding time: 2:50'42 Ave speed: 12.8 mph Max. speed: 84.8 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 446.43 miles Sunday, December 3, 20067:58 PM Peninsula Foothills I was dreading this ride. Several of us guys on Valdez's rides have formed a little group. I call us Valdez's posse or Valdez's clan. It consists of Mike Moore (Speed-Racer- cause he is the really fast up hills), Khang Vo (the Shadow-he is always right behind Valdez), myself (the Boyscout-cause I carry a bag with things to fix just about anything), Stephen Wedgewood (the photographer) and Dan (can't remember his last name...sorry) (the Professor-cause he is a professor). The only reason I went on this ride is because the posse agreed that we'd all ride together. This ride was headed by the same ride leader that left me in Lagunitas on the UNOFFICIAL ALC TRAINING RIDE. I still haven't forgave this person, but alas, I really like our group so I opted to do the ride as long as we all rode together. We did. It was great. Another perk was seeing Ananda. She lives in the south bay area- San Jose and I live in the east bay- Alameda, so we don' get to see each other much unless we are on the same rides. We do keep in touch through emails and our cell phones. Ananda is definately one of my best friends. Even though I hadn't seen her in a while, when she saw me and the posse riding together she told me it was ok for me to do the male bonding thing and ride with them. I tell you, she is great! I had a good time. I lagged behind at the rest stops and lunch to talk with her and after the ride we did our usual thing of going to a burger joint and getting something to eat and playing catch up. Ride distance:26.03 miles Total riding time: 2:09'04 Ave speed: 12.1 mph Max. speed: 32.3 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 410.55 miles Saturday, December 2, 20067:48 PM Alpine- Arastradero Loop Today was a nice day. Cool out, another nice day for riding. Today was another "longish" ride. I'm definitely getting stronger and faster on the flats. Not too hot on the climbs but better. I tried out the new gears and they seem to work. I just have to find some kind of formula now to make my breathing, pedaling and some speed all work together. I remember reading somewhere about finding/ obtaining/ maintaining cadence along with something to the effect that each hill has a rhythm and that one needs to find that rhythm. Also, something about hill climbing being more mental than physical. I will have some homework to do tonight. Talking with people on this ride, the words "training intervals" came up. It is an exercise that helps build strength and endurance needed for hill climbing. It can be done on the rode or on a trainer. I will find out all I can about this and put it to good use. Ride distance:53.16 miles Total riding time: 4:05'56 Ave speed: 12.9mph Max. speed: 60.3 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 384.52 miles Friday, December 1, 20066:43 PM New rear cassette- New gears Today I got my bike back from the shop. I had talked to them about my "spinning" problem. It was suggested that I should have my rear cassette changed. Being an 8 speed, there wasn't a lot of choices. So I had the cassette changed. I test rode the bike and I could definitely feel a difference in the gearing system. Lets hope this helps with my hill climbing problem. Saturday, November 25, 20065:35 PM Tempo Zoo Island Loop Today was chilly, the hell with that...it was COLD! Lots of hill climbing today. I lagged behind again on the hills. I hate those DAMN hills. I almost quit today. I had a really hard time getting up to Mormon Temple. Everybody was waiting for me, I was with the sag, Diane- bless her heart, and when I finally reached the top the group wanted to take off again. I protested and they opted to hang out at the Morman Temple by the ledge to see the spectacular view. Steve, the photographer, wanted to take a group photo. I was to upset to have my picture taken so I stayed out of it and sulked. Diane and Valdez came over and geve me a nice pep talk. Afterwords, I felt better and continued on. I need to work on hill climbing. I have got to beat this. I wish my bike had 2-3 more gears so I could "spin" as they say going up hills. Ride distance:34.15 miles Total riding time: 3:10'26 Ave speed: 10.7mph Max. speed: 30.3 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 331.36 miles Sunday, November 19, 20065:00 PM Palo Alto to Newark ride Today was a nice day. It started off cloudy in places but eventually the sun came up and the day became clear and warm. Ananda rode this ride, so I rode with her mostly. Once again the ride took me into areas that I had never seen before. Very beautiful neighborhoods and scenery. I got several opportunities today to see how fast I could go on the flats. I got up to 15 mph, whoooo weeee! Watch out!!! No mechanical problems. Love this bike. Ride distance:35.77 miles Total riding time: 2:47'21 Ave speed: 12.8 mph Max. speed: 24.4 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 297.21 miles Saturday, November 18, 20066:17 PM Newark-Fremont Loop (Rebeks Smoothie Ride) Today was a beautiful day. The weather was perfect for riding. Went up 2 hills today. I had to stop and rest then continue on to get to the top. No problems on the flats. Using the trainer on flat routines seems to be helping. I was breathing ok and keeping up with the group (on the flats). No mechanical problems. Riders on this ride totaled 8. I met a nice guy named Mike Moore, he lives in SF. I hope we can be friends I could use a buddy to talk to on these rides. Met two Asian women- a couple, they were very nice as well. I also met a guy named Stuart. Valdez was the ride leader and his best friend Stephen was the photographer. They seem really cool. I may do more of Valdez's rides. Ride distance:30.91 miles Total riding time: 2:38'23 Ave speed: 11.7 mph Max. speed: 24.7 mph Total Training Distance thus far: 261.44 miles Saturday, November 4, 20065:50 PM UNOFFICIAL ALC TRAINING RIDE-LAGUNITAS : OUT AND BACK The day started off on a good foot, or pedal should I say. I pasta/carbo loaded the night before, I ate a good breakfast before I headed off to the Sports Basement (Presidio) in SF. Since this was not an official ALC ride, none of the usual stuff was done like stretching, safety speech and especially the reminder that NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND. A phrase I will definately look for from now on. The ride over the GGB and into Sausalito was successful whooo weee! Then came the the first major climb for me...Camino Alto. Boy it was an experience for me...I stopped several times to catch my breath, then tried to speed up to catch up with the group. As soon as I was able to catch up to them, they were off and running, riding actually and I had barely enough time to catch my breath. Next came White wall, another major hill climb. Needless to say I had trouble with that one as well. When I got to the bottom, no one was around, so I had to pull out the route sheet to get me to Lagunitas. Once I got to the restaurant, I saw the other riders already enjoying their lunch. I parked my bike, got myself something to eat and drink. Just as I finished eating the group headed out, retracing the route back to SF. Once again, I had to jump up and start riding in order to keep up with them. I did fine until White wall. There I lost the group and never saw any of them again. Actually I saw one guy at Mikes Bikes in Sausalito, but other than that the group was no where in site. I navigated my way back to SF all by myself which was pretty lonely and a bit unnerving, being in areas where I had never been before and on a bike. I made it up the last hill- Sausalito hill and over the GGB once again with no problems, except feeling very tired and pissed off. I know I shouldn't be upset with the ride leader, after all this was an UNOFFICIAL ALC ride, which means something....people can and will get left behind. I probably wont ride on this persons rides anymore. Fear of abandonment has set in. I don't know if I can shake it. I pulled into Sports Basement's parking lot at 4:30pm. Good thing too cause the daylight was starting to fade into the night and I didn't have a headlight with me. The bike once again was a trooper! She had no mechanical problems at all. What a great bike. She felt good beneath me...I'm starting to get comfortable with her and more in control. I will do shorter rides in the future. I'm not ready for this kind of distance yet. This ride distance was 51.6miles (the longest I have ever done in one day). Total riding time: 6:00'00. Ave speed: 11mph, Max. speed: 20mph Total Training Distance thus far: 230.47 miles Sunday, October 29, 20065:35 PM Purchase -Bike Trainer Today was another group ride with Different Spokes. The ride was ok. Saw new places. Not going to talk about that ride here. At the days end though, I went to Performance Bike in SF and purchased a bike trainer. Since this was my first time having something like this to train with and in my mind, if you get the best training equipment and you use it, you should make some progress. I will do or get just about anything to assure myself that I get the best training possible to successfully complete this ride. Why all the fanfare here about this trainer? Well, its one of the most expensive I have seen around. It cost over $500.00. It is an interactive trainer. That means it connects to your laptop/ computer and you can you the monitor to see actual video footage while you are riding. As you make any turns, speed up or slow down, the video and the motorized roller adjusts accordingly...real time...it calculates and displays just about everything you can imagine: heart rate, cadence, slope of a particular ride, time and distance of ride, how many calories you burned, etc. It came with several dvds so you have a vast selection of rides ranging from very easy and flat to hard, steep climbs. So, there you have it... my way of riding/training during the weekday evenings-now that the days have been getting shorter and weekends when the weather is bad. I should be all set now...so here goes. I plan to ride the trainer at least 2 days a week to get ready for the rides on the weekends. Wish me luck. :O) Monday, October 9, 20064:24 PM Ride blog/Journal-New road bike Today I purchased a real road bike. A Specialized Sequoia Sport. I had rented it over the past weekend to do a ride up in Lake Tahoe with a bike group: Different Spokes, out of SF. The weekend was a mess (if you wanna know what happened over that weekend ask me when you see me...I'll tell you). The bike on the other hand was a trooper. She (I haven't given her a name yet) held up under me through all kinds of conditions. When I went to return the bike at the bike shop (Solano Avenue Cyclery in Albany, CA.) I had forgotten that the coming weekend was the ALC kickoff party at Crissy Field and there were going to be several rides, one of which I had RSVP'd to do. This prompted me to ask the sales person if they had any bikes for sale or if they knew of anyone selling any bikes. They said that they sell all of their rental bikes. I asked even this one and they said yes. They gave me a great price-$350.00. I took it immediately. I went home and looked up the make and model and found out that this bike, the Sequoia Sport, was only made in 2003. The lettering is red on this particular model where as they lettering is black on the non-sport models. Whooo weee!!!, I had a one of a kind type bike too. I immediately decided to take it to my bike shop Cycle City in Alameda,CA. to have it overhauled. $200.00 later, I had a like-new bike. They changed the chain, put new brake pads and cords, new handlebar tape. They oiled and checked all the parts. I had them put puncture proof tires on (they each cost $45.00 a piece). So now I'm ready. This bike should withstand all the training as well as the ride itself. From now on I will do a 2 week checkup on her (the bike) to keep her running smooth as silk. I think its worth it for my piece of mind and I really like the guys at my bike shop, so this way I can see them often and make sure the bike continues to perform well. Saturday, September 16, 20069:00 AM 2nd ride over GGB- Wonder Twin Powers activated Today was the ALC Thank You Ride and BBQ at Crissy Field in SF. Today i chose to ride with a group of ALCers that would do a medium length ride into Tiburon. Since last weeks horrific ride over the GGB (see previous entry), I had to find a way to overcome my fear of crossing that bridge. So during the week, I put a posting on the ALC discussion forum. Lots of people responded with very helpful and encouraging advice. One person in particular said that she had some reservations about crossing that bridge as well but would gladly stay with me the whole way to ensure that I would get over it. Her name is Ananda. She and I talked and emailed each other all week concerning this. Little did we know that this was to be the beginning of a longterm special friendship like the ones you hear about that develops over the course of participating in this endeavour-The Ride. The time came to meet the ALC riders at Crissy Field and for me to personally meet Ananda face to face. It was a wonderful meeting. Ananda and I hit it off right away. We talked and talked as if we were life long friends meeting up again. It was a wonderful feeling. I felt with her along, i could accomplish anything. Time grew near for our group to ride off. I started getting nervous and she immediately said something to me to calm me down. I thought that if she could do that for me I could do that for her. She said she would stay in front of me and keep looking back to check on me and I said I would keep an eye out on her ( in front of me). As we mounted our bikes, the tv cartoon of the Wonder Twins came to my mind. They were a brother and sister team that when they put their rings together magic powers would be bestowed upon both of them and together they could conquer anything. I thought that was fitting for us. I mentioned it to Ananda and she was right there with me. We touched fists together and said "Wonder Twin powers activate" and off we went. The ride across the bridge for me was wonderful. Ananda stayed in front of me, looking back often to check on me. I kept calling out to her i was right there behind her and I was doing ok. We made it over the bridge in no time. We even went past the pillars/towers without a hitch. We were totally exhilerated by that ride over the bridge. I had a smile stretching from ear to ear. We stopped at the hill just past the bridge on the Marin side. We met up with the rest of the group and headed off into Sausalito. The rest of the day was excellent. On the return trip, going over the bridge turned out not to be a problem either. Once again Ananda and I activated our Wonder Twin powers and headed over the bridge. She leading and me following close behind. We made it back to the BBQ , ate and just relished in our victory over the big bad bridge. I am truly grateful for Ananda. I can see we will be best friends forever. We plan to train and ride together as much as humanly possible. We plan to support and love each other no matter what. WOW, what a great experience this is going to be. Saturday, September 9, 200610:00 AM My First ride over The Golden Gate Bridge-Pure Terror Today was my first (unofficial) training ride- The Tiburon Loop as it is called consists of a starting point in SF, riding over the Golden Gate Bridge (GGB), into Sausalito then into Tiburon and back. Well i had no idea what i was getting myself into. You see, i have a fear of heights, especially those connected with bridges & water below. That was a fear i had when i was a kid, now that i'm an adult i figured I had outgrown that fear. Well to my surprise I found out that i hadnt overcome it at all, and if anything it was an even worse. Here's what happened. I was riding quite nicely with the bike group out of SF from a starting point on Market Street in the Castro and winding our way through Golden Gate Park to the GGB. As we made the final turn to start crossing the bridge, fear gripped me like never before. All of a sudden i hit the brakes, almost causing a collision behind me of other bikers on the road. As i moved to the side i noticed i was having a hard time breathing. I was so scared looking at the towers of the bridge that lay ahead of me, i couldnt move. As i caught my breath i was trying to figure out what was going on. I still couldnt move, at least forward anyway. It took quite some time to convince myself to move, and that i had to move forward. I tried to move forward again about 50 feet but had to stop again. I couldnt do it. I was terrified. Another few minutes passed and i finally had to do something or go back. I made a deal with GOD that if i died going over this bridge then i wouldnt have to pay off any of my credit card bills and i would be off the hook (so to speak). If i lived, i had to go back to work on monday and pay the cards off. So once again i moved forward... this time an idea came to me. Dont look at the bike road i was to travel across, but instead look at the on-coming traffic. Since it was early in the morning and the fog was thick as peanut butter, the on-coming cars had their headlights on, at least some of them did. So, my idea was to count each headlight that was on and off...something like this....lights on, lights off, lights on, lights off. Saying that outloud as each car passed me is what kept my concentration as i creeped forward. Going past the first tower was even more hell. I couldnt see any cars and i felt like i was being lead out even further away from the bridge. A feeling of total doom was now engulfing me. I strattled the bike and walked it around, one hand on the handlebars and the other touching the tower wall itself to ensure i was touching the bridge, not hanging out away from it. Once past the tower i went back to my counting of headlights on/ off. The second tower was better, since i could see land a few feet away. Now once i made it to the mainland I looked for the group but alas they had long gone. I looked at my watch and noticed that an hour had passed. I pulled out the route sheet and made my way into Sausalito and Tiburon. I got off the path once or twice but i made it. I met up with the group but was so out of it mentally i couldnt even hold a conversation. To reduce any more embarassement for being last and afraid, i left the group still eating making my way back to the bridge to head home. I made it to the Ferry in Sausalito then chickened out. I grabbed the next ferry to SF and went home. Somehow I will have to find a way to get over that bridge, cause the following week was the ALC Thank You Ride/ BBQ which they were going to ride over the GGB again. Friday, September 8, 20064:54 PM Blog-Journal Starting today I will try to keep a ride by ride blog of my exeperiences on my first ever AIDS LIFECYCLE. Enjoy! |
